Diesel vs Gas Engines

Gasoline is cheaper. Gas engines are also more common, and there’s a wider variety of them, so there’s a solution whether you’re looking for output, efficiency, or some combination of the two. However, they also have some disadvantages relative to diesel engines.

Diesel engines operate under much higher compression. This has some advantages. You’ll get more torque at lower RPMs, higher output from lower displacement, longer engine life, and fuel efficiency that offsets the higher cost per fill-up.

Gas or Diesel in New Chevy Trucks?

Let’s briefly recap the diesel-powered capabilities of the current Chevy truck lineup.

Chevy Colorado

The Chevy Colorado is the only midsize pickup available with a diesel engine. Pair it to a tow package and you can tow up to 7,700 pounds or haul a 1,560-pound payload.

Chevy Silverado 1500

Besides four different gas engines, the Chevy Silverado 1500 has an optional 277 horsepower inline six-cylinder turbodiesel engine. With a tow package, its 460 lb-ft of torque lets you tow up to 13,300 pounds, or haul 2,280 pounds of payload.

Chevy Silverado 2500 and 3500

Different axle weight ratings and frame construction mean different capabilities for the Chevy Silverado HD range. Both can be outfitted with a 6.6-liter Duramax® turbodiesel engine.

• Chevy Silverado 2500 HD: Tows up to 18,510 pounds, or hauls up to 3,900 pounds
• Chevy Silverado 3500 HD: Up to 36,000 pounds of towing, or a 7,442-pound maximum payload; offers optional gooseneck and dually configurations
