GM Sunsetting OnStar® in Older Models

What is OnStar?

OnStar, a General Motors (GM) subsidiary, provides peace of mind with 24-hour emergency services. There are actual human OnStar advisors, which respond whether you’ve been in an accident, your car was stolen, or you need roadside assistance.

Which Vehicles Are Affected by the Cancellation?

All 2014 model-year and older GM vehicles and select 2015-year model vehicles no longer have access to the service. This affects current GM brands like Chevy, GMC, Buick, and Cadillac, and also impacts the legacy Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Saturn, Saab, and Hummer marques.

Why is it No Longer Available in Older Models?

OnStar will no longer be available because it’s incompatible with older GM vehicles. These models use Verizon’s 2G network, which no longer exists since network providers have shifted their focus to expanding coverage of the 4G and 5G networks.

What Do I Do Now?

Don’t worry; you can still access OnStar services if you’re an OnStar member. If so, the OnStar advisors will still be available to provide 24/7 support. For emergency services, simply call 1.888.4ONSTAR or reach out for help through the OnStar Guardian app.

If the 2G shutdown impacts you, you’ll see a reduction in the cost of your monthly subscription since the in-car OnStar service is no longer compatible with your vehicle.
