Three Things to Know When Buying a Car in Another State

March 21st, 2023 by

Have you been struggling to find a vehicle that you love? Considering shopping out-of-state? These are a few things to remember when shopping with IA Chevy dealers such as Woodhouse Chevrolet.

You’ll Pay Sales Tax Wherever You Register Your Vehicle

Even if you purchase a vehicle in Iowa, you’ll still owe sales tax to your home state. So, if you register in Nebraska, for example, you’ll need to pay Nebraska’s sales tax rate. Remember that some states will let dealers collect the sales tax from you and transfer it to the appropriate agency, while others will have you wait to pay taxes, so you’ll need to see what your state dictates.

You must also bring your bill of sale to the DMV when registering your vehicle. This lets them see if you’ve already paid tax and how much.

You May Need a Temporary Registration

If you plan to drive your vehicle home, you might need a temporary registration for your state. Some states allow a trip or transport permit instead. Make sure you find out the timeline for registering a vehicle in your home state to ensure you don’t miss the deadline.

You’ll Need a Vehicle Inspection

Many states will require any vehicles purchased out-of-state to be inspected before registration. After the inspection, you’ll receive a completed and signed inspection form, which typically expires soon after the inspection (Inspections are valid for 90 days in Nebraska).
